Tern Variable Signs for VMS
Tern Variable Sign templates are provided in .bmp file format, for use on a Variable Message Sign (VMS) equipped with light emitting elements (diodes). At 20 and 16 mm of element spacing, the templates amount to the dimensions indicated in the table (see product pictures).
Here, the following dimensions are included:
- 34x34
- 49x49
- 61x61
Abreviations provide a multitude of information
Example file identifyer: TS1210v01_Roa-w_Tri35x31_di2_ES20.bmp
- TS1210 = Tern Symbol No. 1210, contained in this sign
- v01 = (v)ariable sign number
- Roa-w = abbreviated denomination of the sign, here: "road works"
- 35x31 = width and height of the image (in light emitting elements)
- di2 = "discriminator" (measured in (unlit-) elements, see below)
- ES20 = element spacing (see EN 12966, measured in millimeter)
The "discriminator" influences perception
As an extension to the MOA Design Method – which is used to increase visual discrimination Tern Symbols (see below) – additional requirements for depiction on VMS displays have to be met:
A light emitting element (i.e. diode) creates a highly focused dot of light that appears larger than its source. Its dimension remains quite constant over great distance, while the effect of perspective has the dots be perceived closer together, the further away– so dots visibly touch or merge. If not accounted for in sign design, this effect obscures components vital for error-free perception.
To avoid merging where necessary for the perception of graphical forms, the „discriminator“ (di) – a dimension separating emitted dots – is applied. It increases with viewing distance and is measured in (unlit) elements: 2, 3, 4, etc. For more details, please turn to a study on the visual discriminability of graphical content on Variable Message Signs, done in 2019. Maximum visibility of information on signs – improving road safety and fostering inclusion
Tern symbols and are crafted to provide maximum visibility of visual information, despite difficult circumstances, such as movement at high speed, short viewing duration, long viewing distances and inadequate viewing conditions. This is crucial for information perception in vehicular road traffic, as well as for citizens effected by visual impairments to profit from inclusive information.

End-User License Agreement for Tern symbols
By ordering a Tern Symbol, the orderer accepts the following conditions.
On behalf of Stefan Egger, the licensee of a “Tern symbol” indicated on the invoice is granted an time-unlimited license to use the acquired Tern symbol template (vector graphic) on computers that are owned by the licensee.
The licensee agrees not to sell, license or in any way pass on, distribute or circulate Tern symbols. The use of Tern symbols on websites or other electronic media that can be accessed by others than the licensee is prohibited.
Limitation of liability: It is warranted that every licensed Tern symbol is free of errors for 90 days from the date of purchase. During this period any Tern symbol template proven to be defective is replaced.
